Valerie Syposz’s solo exhibition will be held at Shirota Gallery in Tokyo from Monday, April 20, 2015 to Saturday, May 2, 2015. Valerie describes her thoughts on this upcoming exhibition as follows.
When I first encountered printmaking, it was love at first sight.
Out of the many desires that people inherently have, to eat is not only a way to achieve satisfaction and pleasure, but of course also necessary to sustain life. I fully understood this fact, yet there was a time in my life when I decided to lock away this urge deep inside.
Over the course of many years, I began to reface these naturally human desires and cravings. It was during this journey that I first experienced printmaking. I was deeply affected.

I have tried working with a variety of techniques; drawing, painting, intermedia arts, but it was always printmaking that fit. Print, with it’s unique aesthetics, ability for expression, importance on both technical and creative. Printmaking gave meaning to my artistic creation, to my life.
From there on, I have dealt with many themes including portraiture, identity, food culture, and social satire. Through any subject matter, I am hoping to express the feeling of ‘now’, ‘the present’.
For this exhibition, using lithography, monoprint and wood engraving, I re-examined my relation to the ideas of craving, pleasure, and earthly delights. Pleasure was also vital to the creative process, enjoying the possibilities of mark-making, colour use and layering in print. What feelings will resonate with the viewer when faced with the prints? Only time will tell.
